Being an artist is inextricable from my self-understanding. The practice of creating things was planted and tended by my school and its community -- education based on Rudolf Steiner’s principles of anthroposophy. In short my schooling, which seeps outwards from the classroom, was rich with art in its most humble and nurturing forms. We learn to knit, sew, work with wood, weave, paint, draw, solder, blacksmith, and a hundred other little crafts. We don’t learn from textbooks but make our own from first grade through high school. Everything I’ve learned about the world, everything I saw, was translated into my own handwriting, alongside colorful portraits, sketches, and colored pencil maps. Today I have drawers and drawers full of books dating back to first grade that document my journey as a growing human being and simultaneously as an artist.

The interconnectedness of experience and art - learning something and then creating a drawing, painting, or poem about it - has hugely informed how I approach the world today. Beyond my creative process, it has shaped my view of education and the value I place in teaching that meets people where they are and nurtures them as whole beings. Above all it reminds me how vitally important it is to teach people that being an artist is not strictly a skill - it is an act. To become an artist you must simply begin, and that is all.

One of my favorite quotes comes from The Little Prince, who says, “love does not consist in gazing at each other, but in looking outward together in the same direction.” In creation, alone or in partnership, I find the most nurturing and divine direction to look.
